Master Index System for Naturalizations, 1906-present.

The master index system serves as a nationwide index to all naturalization actions initiated in the United States from 1906 to the present, regardless of whether the court of jurisdiction was federal, state or local. From 1906 to 1960, the index was maintained as a manual card file, which is duplicated on microfilm. Beginning in 1960, the index was maintained on a computer system, referred to as the "Automated Master Index System." Included in the index are records relating to applicants for naturalization as well as certain categories of aliens reported under agency statistical requirements.
